I asked the most competitive person I know how she’s been able to compete (and win) at the highest levels in business and in life. Here’s her counterintuitive advice on how she manages to win every time she competes…

The big takeaways:

  • A five word phrase that accelerates your growth as an entrepreneur.
  • How to make winning a daily habit.
  • The only thing you need to focus on to make your business bigger, better and stronger each day.

  1. Susan Garrett…. where do I begin ?
She is the most inspiring woman I have gotten to know in many years.
Not only is she super intelligent but extremely smart too and she has an unsatisfiable hunger to know more, do better, get better and at the same time helps many many thousands of people and their dogs.
She shares her knowledge in so many different learning ways so that everybody can understand her teachings and become better than they were yesterday. She inspires others to give it all.
If agility, dogs and their behaviour were not her passion, I would have certainly liked her to be a life coach (and more). She has everything it takes to be the female Tony Robbins. But even then, she would be one step in front of him, being a woman 😉

  2. Very, very well said – the significance you attach to it – is so, so true. I have beat myself up by assigning the meaning someone else had to my growth (too slow….) it began to really wear me down – but you know what? That was complete wrong! I have an online business that has grown from 50% to 30% over the year before… that’s actually very good. But according to ‘others’ that I allowed to define success for me, that was not enough because I didn’t have this or that yet…

But part of continuing to be successful, you have to apply the formula for the condition you are in – not what someone else assigns… so, very great message. I just lost a few pound realizing that. Fighting with incorrect assignment of meaning to an event is potentially fatal.

    • Great message Al. This so reminds me that “I have to do me, and you do you!”. Trying to run your life by someone else’s standard doesn’t work.

  3. Thanks for sharing this interview, it gave me a lot!

I googled on this sentence (didn’t know it was an ad) and found an amazing article that fits right in here, about slow and fast changes. It’s a perfect addition to what Susan says.

  4. Better has no finish line! No matter how I finish, I’m always a winner – because I always learn lessons from the experience. Good stuff, Maynard! … I mean Jeff and Susan.

  5. “Better has no finish line!” What a great thought process, Susan. Thank you so much for some great takeaways. LOVE it!

  6. Yes indeed it only matters what importance we attach to the feelings we get . Being a winner or a loser , or being in the end of life situation or on the top of our pinnacle of success , if we can breath in and out and say to ourselves this is in fact the ways I always felt prior to winning the game, may be the outcome will change altogether. Much appreciated

  7. Thank you for a great inspirational interview – better has no limits will be my motto for life

  8. at our house, we call people like this, “OA’s” for Over-achievers !!!! She’s got all the right stuff, good for her!

  9. I get drawn into a comparison game as a YouTuber because there is so much analytical data provided to mess with your head, if you allow it. Every time I choose to not focus on the comparative aspect of the analytics, and shift focus to the lessons there, I get bigger, better, faster!

  10. Powerful lessons for a 7 minute video! It is one of the things I love most about these weekly videos– they pack a lot of punch in just a few minutes. I am definitely going to remember “Better has no finish line” and nervous or excited–it’s my choice to make. Good stuff!

  11. It’s always inspiring to hear from someone who is driven to win. I often forget how important it is to create space for yourself to think, grow, and produce value for others. Also, the idea of adding meaning to something like nervousness or even fear (which are negative) and define them as excitement or challenge (which are positive) is a great tool to keep me motivated to move forward and reach the next step in the development of my platform. Thanks Jeff!

  12. Susan is amazing! So inspiring and such a great message. I’m motivated to keep going, loved the interview!

  13. outstanding. great interview with someone who has been walking her talk for more than a quarter century. deeply appreciate the perspectives and lessons shared which can be of service to everyone. and it starts with each of us and the observer/interpreter we are. it’s about the attitude. i’m jazzed. thanks.

  14. Jeff! Susan! I love the “Do whatever you do to create more space up her.” Part at the very end. Wow-! Thank you

  15. Hi Susan, Hi Jeff
    thank you!
As a PLF student- I was just sitting working on my online business and felt overwhelmed of the impact I could make if the people would allow me-sweating, heart racing…and after your video I no longer say I am very afraid but I am very excited 🙂
    Love Karin

  16. As part of Susan’s team… Susan pushes each of us… to keep growing… to be a different version of who we were yesterday… we live it everyday!

  17. I’m 65 and ongoing continuous improvement has been my mantra for as long as I can remember. I thrill at the notion that I can continue toward “better” for as long as I have breath. I’ve always claimed if I string together a series of Best Years Ever, I will, in the end, have a well-lived life. Good to know that there are others who share in these liberating beliefs.

  18. Thank you for this interview. It so resonated as a former gymnast who always went after and continues to go after personal best. “Better has no finish line.” So true. I get asked – “What your last goal you want to accomplish?” and I find it to be an odd question. My challenge I took in was longer projects/ more complex / bigger potential impact because I was used to developing routines/ learning well / executing flawlessly. I wanted to take on something I could fail at so I could learn how to win not just assume I would win again. Susan is so right. If you can look at winning something out of every challenge it’s an awesome mindset. I found it curious she talks about similar symptoms and different stories made up about just before competition. I always felt: calm/ in the Zone -slowed heart rate and pulse, and excited. I would go more into contemplation mode just before.

  19. Well done, well said! Yes, it’s all in how you frame what arises in life. Always a gift to be realized, no matter how dark the moment may seem to others. Thank you Susan and Jeff!

  20. Thank you! Such powerful and insightful messages condensed into so short a time. Wow!

  21. Win Physically. WIN emotionally and WIN Spiritually. When your spiritual and emotional winning supersedes the material and physical “REALITY”. How do you resolve to leave (money and things) the world behind? What does winning look like in a time where the planet is in total disruption and what you have is your PARADIGM you can share with others as your unique gift for the world.

  22. So nice to meet Susan. What a cool lady. Thanks, Jeff! Great message for the coming year. Wishing you both the warmest and happiest of holidays seasons!

Susan is the most incredible person I’ve met in my life, and I’m proud to be able to call her my mentor. Such a rolemodel in every part of life!

  26. I love this message … Some time ago I was attending art class and was experimenting with a new technique so I could learn to use art as a joy and stress release, and to help me let go of the detail. The greatest lesson I ended up learning in this process was actually how to detach my self-worth and happiness from what I was producing, a lesson I didn’t realise I needed at the time but that has helped improve my confidence immensely since then. To hear you sum it up like this echoing what I experienced is excellent, thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the wisdom and inspiration!

  28. I felt a little shocked when you said Susan is the most competitive person you know. I understood she’s competitive, yet she looks much more concerned with her own sense of balance than what other’s are doing. What a good point BHNFL!

  29. Wow! Susan is rapidly growing into one of my new heros. Jeff has been one for awhile now. So motivating!
