No matter if you’re a beginner or an experienced entrepreneur, one thing holds people back more than anything else – perfectionism.
I’ve coached thousands, and I see it time and time again. People want everything to be perfect before they put it out there.
I get it. I’ve been there. I still struggle with it. It’s that I need to plan out every single step, to make every detail flawless, whether it’s the product, the offer, the page layout. You end up getting stuck in the minutiae.
You know, things like, “Should I use this font or that font?” It’s a classic case of creating obstacles for yourself instead of just launching.
Don't Get Caught Up in the Small Stuff
Let me share something with you. When I was renovating my home – massive project, by the way – we basically had to tear the whole place apart and rebuild it. Windows, doors, fireplaces… you name it, we redid it.
At some point, my contractor came up to me and asked, “What do you want to do about the hinges on the doors?”
I had never in my life thought about hinges. But we were so deep into the remodel that it was a valid question. It was a decision that had to be made.
The problem is, some people get stuck thinking about the hinges before they’ve even laid the foundation of their house.
And you know what? I see this in business all the time.
People are obsessed with getting the branding just right, choosing the perfect fonts, deciding which blogging software to use. But none of that matters if you haven’t got your offer out there yet.
Focus on the Offer, Not the Details
If you want to succeed, it’s not about picking the right font or the right color scheme. It’s about creating a great offer, getting it in front of people, and improving it over time.
The best entrepreneurs I know? They’re obsessed with their offers and their marketing. Everything else is secondary.
It’s an iterative process. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. You just need to get your first offer out there, see how it performs, and then keep improving it. That’s how I launched the Product Launch Formula® (PLF).
The first time I made the offer, it wasn’t great. It worked, sure, but it wasn’t amazing. Over time, I made it better. Now, people rave about the bonuses – but that didn’t happen overnight. It happened because I kept putting it out there and iterating.
Here’s What You Need to Do
To make this even clearer, let me break it down for you:
1. Stop obsessing over the tiny details before you’ve even started. Don’t let fonts, colors, or platforms hold you back.
2. Focus on your offer – make it something that people truly want, and get it in front of them.
3. Take action, don’t wait for the perfect plan, because no plan survives first contact with the market.
4. Iterate and improve. Once your offer is out there, you’ll get feedback – use that to make your next offer even better.
5. Don’t let perfectionism become procrastination. It’s just an excuse to delay launching. You’re never going to get it perfect, and that’s okay.
First Things First, Second Things Not at All
Write that one down. Tweet it if you want. First things first, second things not at all. Don’t worry about the color of the hinges on your future home before you’ve even laid the foundation. Just get started.
Don’t obsess over which platform to use, or which headline font will be perfect. None of that matters if you haven’t put your offer out there yet.
Perfectionism Doesn’t Just Stop Beginners
It's not just beginners who fall into this trap. I’ve seen experienced entrepreneurs, people who’ve already had a lot of success, get held back by perfectionism.
They start planning & planning, and before they know it, they’ve planned themselves into paralysis.
It’s a classic mistake. They think they’re optimizing, but you’re not really optimizing anything until you’ve got something in the market.
There’s an old military saying “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.”
Well, no marketing plan survives contact with the market. Your prospects get a vote, and their vote is whether they buy or not.
Perfectionism is the best excuse in the world. It’s a way to justify not launching. You tell yourself, “It’s not ready yet,” but the truth is, it’s never going to be perfect.
I’ve been there. I still struggle with it. But if you want to have an impact, if you want to build the life and the business you dream of, you’ve got to get over it.
The Bottom Line
You’ve got to ship it. You’ve got to get your offer out there. Then you take the feedback, and you get better. You keep improving. That’s how you create something great. Not by waiting for perfection, but by getting in the game, learning, and iterating.
So, stop waiting for the perfect moment. Stop letting perfectionism hold you back. Take action. Get your offer out into the world, and watch your business grow.
The same principle lies at the heart of my Product Launch Formula, which has generated over $1 BILLION in sales across every market imaginable. It didn’t happen by waiting for everything to be perfect – it happened by launching, learning, and iterating.
