Back in the days, I had an incredible conversation with Sean Platt at a mastermind event. Sean is the co-author of “Write. Publish. Repeat,” a must-read book on building a successful publishing business, particularly on Kindle.
He’s written over five million words, which is equivalent to writing the entire Harry Potter series five times over, all in just three years!
With over 50 books to his name, Sean has a wealth of knowledge about storytelling and marketing.
Why Storytelling Matters in Marketing
We, as humans, are naturally drawn to stories. They give us purpose, direction, and meaning. Stories are a powerful tool for connecting with your audience on a deeper level.
Sean shared that he always starts with an outline when writing a story. This approach ensures he knows the ending before he begins, even if the ending evolves over time.
This method is equally effective in marketing. When you have a clear plan and know your desired outcome, you’re much more likely to achieve your goals.
A Powerful Combination
So, let’s dive into something that Sean Platt and I are both incredibly passionate about: the marriage of good writing and strong marketing. Sean really drove this point home during our chat, and it’s something every entrepreneur needs to grasp.
Here’s the deal: being a great writer isn’t enough. You can craft the most beautiful prose, but if you don’t understand how to market that writing, it’s like shouting into the void.
On the flip side, a good writer who knows how to market their work? They’re unstoppable.
Think about it this way: a story is what connects us. It’s what makes us care. And in marketing, whether it’s email marketing, social media marketing, or affiliate marketing, stories are your secret weapon.
Imagine you’re scrolling through your inbox. You see dozens of emails, all vying for your attention. What makes you click on one and ignore the others? It’s the story.
A compelling story that hooks you right from the subject line and keeps you reading. That’s the magic of storytelling in email marketing.
And it’s not just about getting clicks. It’s about building a relationship with your audience. When you share a story, you’re inviting them into your world. You’re making them feel something, and that’s what drives action.
Integrating Storytelling into Your Marketing Channels
1. Email Marketing
Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to reach your audience, but it’s easy for emails to get lost in a crowded inbox.
By incorporating storytelling, you can make your emails stand out and capture your readers' attention right from the start.
Start with a Compelling Hook:
- The first line of your email should grab attention. Think of it as your email’s headline. A compelling hook could be a surprising fact, a provocative question, or an intriguing statement that piques curiosity.
Share Personal Stories:
- Personal stories build authenticity and trust. Share a moment from your journey that taught you a valuable lesson or led to a breakthrough. This creates a personal connection with your readers.
Customer Success Stories:
- Highlight stories of customers who have achieved remarkable results using your product or service. These testimonials not only validate your offering but also inspire other readers to take action.
Clear and Relatable Call to Action:
- Every story should lead to a clear call to action. Make sure your readers know exactly what to do next. For example, instead of a generic “Sign up for our newsletter,” you could say, “Discover how Jane doubled her sales using our email marketing tips. Sign up for our newsletter to get these tips delivered to your inbox!”
2. Social Media Marketing
Now, let’s shift to social media. Social media is all about engagement, and stories are the best way to engage your audience.
Here’s how you can use storytelling to enhance your social media marketing channels:
Behind-the-Scenes Glimpses
Share the inner workings of your business. Show how your team collaborates, the process behind your product creation, or even a day in the life at your company. This transparency builds trust and makes your audience feel included.
Customer Success Stories
Highlight stories of customers who have benefited from your product or service. Share their journey, the problems they faced, and how your solution made a difference. This not only validates your product but also inspires others.
Personal Anecdotes
Share your own stories – your successes, challenges, and what you’ve learned along the way. This humanizes your brand and makes you relatable to your audience.
Visual and Video Content
Use visuals and videos to make your stories more engaging. A short video clip or a series of photos can bring your story to life and make it more memorable.
Community Building
Social media is about building a community. Use storytelling to make your followers feel like they are part of your journey. Use inclusive language and engage with their comments and stories.
3. Podcasting & YouTube
Podcasts and YouTube are powerful platforms for storytelling and reaching your audience through different formats. They offer unique ways to build deeper connections and trust with your audience.
- Podcasting: Share stories in a conversational format. Talk about behind-the-scenes insights, interview customers, and dive deep into topics that matter to your audience. It's like having a personal chat with each listener, making your brand feel closer and more relatable.
- YouTube: Use video storytelling to connect on a visual and emotional level. Share tutorials, behind-the-scenes videos, and testimonials. Show, don’t just tell. A well-crafted video can bring your story to life and leave a lasting impression.
Defining Your Channels
To make the most of these marketing channels, it’s crucial to understand & define them clearly.
- Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Threads.
- Podcasting: Audio platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.
- YouTube: Video content platform for tutorials, vlogs, and promotional videos.
Affiliate Marketing
And then there’s affiliate marketing. Here, trust is everything. Your audience needs to believe in the products or services you’re recommending.
And what builds trust better than a genuine story? Share your personal experiences with the products. Talk about how they’ve made a difference in your life or in the lives of your clients.
For instance, instead of just listing features, say something like, “I was skeptical about this email marketing tool at first, but after seeing a 40% increase in open rates, I’m a believer. Here’s how it worked for me…”
The Power of Knowing Your Ending
One of the most valuable lessons Sean shared was the importance of knowing your ending. In both storytelling and marketing, having a clear goal from the start helps guide your efforts and ensures you stay on track.
This doesn’t mean your plans can’t evolve, but having a direction is crucial.
For example, in your marketing campaigns, set clear objectives. Whether it’s increasing email sign-ups, boosting social media engagement, or driving sales through affiliate links, knowing your goals helps you craft stories that lead your audience towards those outcomes.
Passion and Purpose in Storytelling
Before we wrapped up, I had to ask Sean what keeps him passionate about his work. His answer was worth every second.
Sean told me, “I get up every day knowing I’m going to make people feel and think. That makes me really happy, and I do that through story. I learn more about myself every day because I write every day. And every day, I get at least 10, sometimes as many as a hundred emails saying, ‘I loved your story,’ or ‘Your book changed my life.’ We get emails like that about ‘Write. Publish. Repeat.’ Every day, and that really drives me.”
He continued, “I love making people feel passionate, happy, excited, or even scared – I write a lot of horror, after all. I’m passionate about stories and being a part of people’s lives and memories, their dinner conversations, and all of that.”
Sean’s dedication to storytelling and his ability to connect with his readers on such a deep level is truly inspiring. It’s a powerful reminder of why storytelling is so crucial in our marketing efforts.
