When I first started my business, I went through an amazing goal-setting exercise, something I think everyone should try. There are countless ways to set goals, but the one I followed was about setting the biggest goals I could imagine – goals I believed were possible.
I made a list that covered all aspects of my life – business, income, relationships, health. At the time, I thought I was dreaming big. But looking back now, it’s incredible to see just how modest those goals really were.
Achieving Every Goal… Except One
Here’s the crazy part: within just a few years, I had hit almost every single goal on that list. It only took about three years, and I had achieved what felt like the biggest dreams I could set for myself. That’s the power of writing down your goals, reviewing them, and staying focused.
But there was one goal that stayed unchecked. And as the years passed, even as the decades rolled on, I still hadn’t reached it.
The Dream That Stayed Out of Reach
One of my biggest passions has always been whitewater kayaking. I’ve loved the thrill of paddling down wild rivers. I had this dream of kayaking in Central America during the winter months. Living in Colorado, winters meant rivers were either frozen or not running, so my goal was to escape the cold and paddle on warm rivers in Central or South America.
For some reason, I never made it happen. Year after year, it stayed on my list as that one goal I hadn’t hit. Until recently.
Finally Achieving a 25-Year Dream
Recently, I spent a week and a half in Costa Rica, paddling down some of the most beautiful rivers I’ve ever seen.
And this time, it wasn’t just me fulfilling that dream. I brought my Mastermind group with me. We paddled the stunning Pejibaye River, surrounded by lush rainforest and the sounds of nature.
This wasn’t just about kayaking. It was about finally achieving a goal I set 25 years ago and doing it in a way I couldn’t have imagined back then – sharing the experience with a group of amazing people.
Reflecting on the Growth Mindset That Got Me Here
What amazes me is how far I’ve come since I first set those goals. Back then, I was dreaming big (or at least what felt big to me at the time). But now, when I look at how my life has unfolded, I realize how small those early goals really were.
I’ve not only achieved them, but I’ve surpassed them in ways I never could have imagined.
Kayaking in Costa Rica, and sharing this experience with my second family – my Mastermind group – is more than just a goal fulfilled. It’s a reminder of the incredible life I’ve been fortunate to build, step by step.
Setting Goals and Staying Focused
I know a lot of people reading this have wildly successful businesses, but I also know there are some who are just wondering if they can even get started.
Here’s what I’ve learned through my journey…
If you can think it, if you can believe it, and if you can write it down as a goal, then it’s possible.
A growth mindset is about constantly moving forward. It’s not about comparing yourself to others, but about comparing yourself to who you were yesterday.
Every day, you take small, incremental steps. You put one foot in front of the other, and over time, the results start to feel inevitable.
When Success Becomes Inevitable
I’ve seen this play out in my life and in the lives of many of my students. They set big goals, created plans, and started working towards them.
Now, here’s the thing…the plan will never be perfect.
There will always be changes, pivots, and adjustments along the way. But if you stay focused on your goals, even when the path changes, success becomes inevitable.
Looking back, I can’t believe that a goal I set 25 years ago – one I couldn’t achieve for so long – is now a reality.
Not only did I finally get to paddle in Central America, but I also got to share that experience with the people in my Mastermind. It just goes to show that if you keep moving forward, even your biggest dreams can come true.

Some goals will come quickly, others might take decades – but with a growth mindset, they will happen.
