Let me introduce someone who has made a profound impact on my life: Dr. Julie Helmrich

Julie is a highly experienced psychologist who has spent thousands of hours working with entrepreneurs. Over the years, she’s become a trusted advisor and a key figure in my world, and I often call her the “Jeff Whisperer” because of her incredible ability to help me understand and shift my own mindset and narratives.

Julie specializes in helping entrepreneurs understand the stories they tell themselves, and more importantly, how to rewrite those stories. In our world of business, these internal narratives – whether we realize it or not – play a massive role in our success (or lack thereof).

Today, I want to dive into how shifting those narratives can unlock a growth mindset and lead to lasting success.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

As entrepreneurs, we are constantly telling ourselves stories – about our abilities, our limitations, and what’s possible for us. These stories shape our actions, and ultimately, our outcomes.

One of the things I’ve learned from Julie is that we all have an ongoing internal dialogue. It’s like a constant stream of thoughts running in the background, and more often than not, that inner conversation isn’t doing us any favors.

If someone were standing next to you, constantly saying things like, “You can’t do this,” or “Who do you think you are?” you’d know immediately to distance yourself from them. But when those same thoughts come from inside your own mind, you might not recognize how damaging they are.

Rewriting Your Narrative to Fuel a Growth Mindset

You can shift that internal dialogue. Instead of thinking, “I don’t have enough resources,” you can train yourself to think, “I’m resourceful – I’ll figure it out.” That simple shift in narrative can change everything.

A lot of entrepreneurs make the mistake of thinking they need to eliminate fear before they take action. But as Julie has taught me, fear doesn’t disappear until you start doing the thing you’re afraid of.

Once you take action, fear starts to lose its grip. This shift from “I’m not ready” to “Let’s figure this out” is the key shift for a growth mindset, even if you don’t have enough resources.

A Common Entrepreneurial Struggle

One of the most common internal narratives that entrepreneurs struggle with is the idea that wanting more is selfish. If you’ve come from humble beginnings or a background where hard work didn’t always lead to financial success, you might feel guilty about striving for more.

There’s often an underlying feeling that if you achieve more, it somehow reflects negatively on the sacrifices your parents or loved ones made.

But the truth is, if you had more, wouldn’t you be able to give more?

That shift is a must…

Wanting to grow isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. More success allows you to have a bigger impact – not just on your own life, but on the lives of others.

It’s Not Just About Tactics

People often come to me for marketing strategies and launch techniques. And while those are important, they’re not the whole story. The real driver of lasting success is what’s going on inside your head. It’s all about your inner game.

What really matters is your internal narrative, the story you’re telling yourself. Successful entrepreneurs are constantly refining that narrative, and it’s a process you need to embrace if you want to keep leveling up.

Here’s what it boils down to:

  • Tactics aren’t enough – Without the right mindset, even the best strategies will only take you so far.
  • Your inner narrative shapes everything – It determines how you act and what you believe is possible.
  • Keep evolving – Growth comes from constantly revisiting and improving the story you’re telling yourself.

You’ve probably heard the saying, What got you here won’t get you there.” That’s true not just for your actions, but for your mindset as well. The internal story that helped you achieve your current success might not be enough to get you to the next level. Your narrative needs to evolve as you grow.

The good news? Narratives are fixable.

Unlike personality traits that are harder to change, you can always rewrite your internal story. And once you do, you’ll find that everything else – your actions, your decisions, your outcomes – starts to fall into place.

Common Limiting Beliefs Entrepreneurs Face

One of the limiting beliefs Julie and I often talk about is the idea that “I’ll take action when I have enough resources.” This belief, whether it’s about time, money, or something else – keeps so many entrepreneurs stuck.

The thing is, you were resourceful enough to start your business in the first place, and that resourcefulness will continue to serve you as you grow.

Another common limiting belief is the need for external validation. Many of us feel like we need someone to give us permission or tell us we’re capable before we can move forward.

But the reality is that if people are coming to you, they’ve already chosen you. Your job is simply to deliver – no more convincing required.

One of the biggest narrative shifts I’ve made is around the idea of impact. I firmly believe that entrepreneurs are the future of humanity. When you have a clear vision for the impact you want to make, that narrative pulls you through the tough times. It becomes the guiding force that keeps you moving forward, even when things get difficult.

If your vision is clear, you can move faster and with more purpose. But when it’s foggy or uncertain, it’s easy to get stuck.

The clearer your “why,” the easier it is to stay on course and achieve your goals.

The Power of “I Decided

One of the most powerful ideas Julie has shared with me is the concept of decision.

Every narrative shift starts with a simple but profound phrase: “I decided.” Whether it’s “I decided to start my own business” or “I decided to overcome this challenge,” it all starts with a decision.

Once you make that decision, you’re taking control of your narrative. When I decided that entrepreneurs were the future and that my mission was to help them, it gave me the permission I needed to push forward, even when things got tough. That decision became the foundation of my success.

And remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Surround yourself with people who help you see the possibilities, and most importantly, make the decision today to rewrite your story.
